Top 10 Ways to Speed Up Your Computer’s Boot Time

If theres one thing everyone dreads, its rebooting their computer. It may only take a minute or two, but it can seem like forever. Here are our top 10 tweaks thatll make your computer boot a little faster.

This is a pretty controversial topic, as there are a lot of startup-tweaking myths out there. So, we took to the streets (of the internet) and searched for as many easy, well-supported tips as we could find. There may be others, some of which are controversial, but these 10 things are almost sure to get you a faster-booting machine.

10. Tweak Your BIOS

When you first set up your computer, your BIOS is set up to make things a bit more convenient for you, but once youre all set up, those things can be disabled. If you hold the DEL key when you start up your computer (or whatever key your BIOS tells you to enter setup), you can turn on the "Quick Boot" option and move your hard disk to the top of the boot priority list. The Quick Boot setting will turn off the tests your computer runs when it first turns on, and the boot priority tweak will tell your computer not to look for CDs, thumb drives, or other media when it first starts, which will get you booted into your OS quicker. If you ever need to boot from CD though, youll have to go back into the BIOS and change this again before you do.

9. Clean Out Programs that Launch at Startup

One of the most tried and true ways to speed up your boot process is to keep unnecessary programs from starting up with your computer. You can do this by runningmsconfig from the Start Menus search box, and going to the Startup tab. This applications list will tell you what each of those applications does, so you know which ones you can disable and which ones you dont want to. Previously mentioned Soluto is also a fantastic way to clean up these programs, and these days its got a bunch of other handy features that make it worth a download.

8. Delay Windows Services That Run at Startup

Many people argue that disabling Services from msconfig will also speed up your boot time, but weve found that this is more problematic than anything. However, you can delay certain startup services so that your computer boots quickly and then worries about them later—after all, you dont need all those services the minute you start up your machine.

7. Change Your Boot Menus Timeout Values

If youre dual-booting your machine, then your boot menu probably has a "timeout value", meaning the amount of time it waits for you to make a selection before it just boots into the default OS. On Windows, this timeout value is often 30 seconds, which is a long time to wait if you arent looking directly at your screen. To change this timeout value, head to msconfig and click on the BOOT.INI tab, and change the number in the timeout box to something lower. If youre dual-booting with Linux, youre probably running the GRUB boot menu, and you can change the timeout on that too.

6. Disable Unused Hardware

Your computer loads a lot of drivers when it first starts up, some of which you might not even use. Head into the Device Manager from the Start Menus search box, and look for anything you arent using—Bluetooth controllers, modems, and virtual Wi-Fi adapters are common culprits. Right-click on the entry you want to disable and hit "Disable". Remember to only do this with things you dont actually use—if you use Wireless Hosted Networks, youll need to keep those virtual Wi-Fi adapters enabled. Its also worth mentioning here that keeping all your drivers up to date will help this portion of the startup time, too (which you can do with the help of a program like previously mentioned Device Doctor).

5. Keep Your Antivirus Running and Up to Date

This should go without saying, but well say it anyway: install some antivirus software, keep it up to date, and run a regular scan. This is more of a preventative measure than an actual boot-speeding tip, but if you everdo get malware, its sure to slow your computers boot time. With a good antivirus around like Microsoft Security Essentials, youll be more protected against that happening. Dont like MSE? There are somegreat ones out there too, so theres no reason not to have one around.

4. Remove Unnecessary Fonts

Since the dawn of time, Windows has loaded fonts at startup and slowed down the boot time. This is less of a problem than it used to be, but it can still slow you down a bit. Windows 7 loads over 200 fonts at startup; even more if youve installed Microsoft Office. Chances are, you use very few of those fonts, so you can hide them to speed up that process. In Windows 7, open up the Fonts folder from the Start Menus search box, and check off all the fonts you dont need. Then click the "Hide" button in the toolbar. This way, if you ever want them, you can bring them back, but Windows wont load them at startup. Note that just removing a few fonts probably isnt going to make a noticeable difference—youll probably need to get rid of a few hundred. That said, you might have hundreds more fonts installed than you realized, so that isnt as ridiculous as it sounds.

3. Upgrade Your RAM

Installing more RAM has always been an effective way of speeding up your computer, and that hasnt changed. RAM is pretty cheap these days, so if youre running low, theres no reason not to stock up and make your computer run a little smoother. Weve gone over how to replace it in both a desktopand a laptop, and even for the inexperienced, its a pretty simple procedure.

2. Give Your Computer a Static IP

When you first start up your computer, it spends a significant amount of time asking the network for an IP address. You can get rid of this process altogether by giving your computer a static IP address that never changes. Not only does this make your network easier to manage (since each computer will always have the same IP address), but it can shave a bit more time off your startup. Heres how to do it in different versions of Windows.

1. Install a Solid State Drive

These days, your hard drive is probably the biggest bottleneck in your machine. One of the best upgrades you can make to your computer is to install a solid state drive, which has super-fast read times that can speed up your startup considerably. Theyre certainly not a cheap upgrade, nor are they without their own maintenance requirements, but if you want to speed up your computer and its boot time, you cant go wrong by installing an SSD. The difference will be shocking.

Tornado Air Defence Variant (ADV) adalah versi pencegat dari pesawat tempur Tornado yang dikembangkan oleh Panavia Aircraft. Tornado ADV mampu terbang dengan kecepatan maksimum 2,27 Mach (2.780 km/jam), sementara Tornado versi Interdictor and Strike/Electronic Combat and Reconnaissance (IDS/ECR) hanya menawarkan kecepatan maksimum 2,2 Mach (2.695 km/jam).

Kecepatan terbang hingga 2,35 Mach (2.878 km/jam) menjadikan MiG-23 (kode NATO: Flogger) sebagai salah satu pesawat tempur tercepat di dunia. Lebih dari 5.000 pesawat telah dikirimkan ke berbagai negara di seluruh dunia.

MiG-23 turut berperan dalam Perang Iran-Irak, Perang Soviet di Afghanistan dan Perang Teluk. MiG-23 saat ini masih digunakan dalam jumlah terbatas oleh pengguna asing. Persenjataannya terdiri dari kanon GSH-23 belly-mounted, rudal udara-ke-udara Vympel R-23 (AA-7 Apex) dan R-60 (AA-8 Aphid).

MiG-23 didukung oleh dua mesin turbojet Tumansky R-29B yang masing-masing menghasilkan daya dorong 78,4 kN dan dengan afterburner yang bisa mencapai 112,8 kN.

Shenyang J-11

Shenyang J-11 adalah pesawat tempur buatan China yang desainnya berdasarkan Su-27SK Rusia. J-11 saat ini dioperasikan oleh Angkatan Udara Tentara Pembebasan Rakyat (PLAAF) China. J-11 mampu terbang dengan kecepatan hingga 2,35 Mach (2.878 km/jam).

J-11 awal masih menggunakan komponen utama buatan Rusia, sedangkan J-11B sudah banyak menggunakan peralatan buatan China, seperti sistem senjata dan avionik. Persenjataan meliputi kanon 30 mm, rudal udara-ke -udara dan udara-ke-darat, bom cluster dan roket.

Kekuatan terbangnya berasal dari mesin Lyulka AL-31F (buatan Rusia) atau Woshan WS-10A Taihang (buatan China). Dengan afterburner, masing-masing mesin menghasilkan daya dorong 123 kN, dan memiliki jangkauan maksimum hingga 3.530 km.

Su-27SK - 2,35 Mach

Pesawat tempur multiperan Sukhoi Su-27SK merupakan versi ekspor dari Su-27 (kode NATO: Flanker) yang dikembangkan Biro Desain Sukhoi. Pesawat ini mampu terbang dengan kecepatan 2,35 Mach (2.878 km/jam).

Produksi Su-27SK dimulai pada tahun 1991. Persenjataan terdiri dari kanon otomatis GSh-301 30mm,  enam rudal jarak menengah R-27R1 (R-27ER1), dua rudal jarak menengah 27T1 (R-27ET1), enam rudal RVV-AE active radar-homing, enam rudal jarak pendek R-73E, bom cluster dan roket.

Dua mesin AL-31F yang masing-masing menghasilkan rasio dorong 122,6 kN, juga memberikannya kecepatan terbang 1.400 km/jam di permukaan laut. Dengan tanki bahan bakar internal yang berkapasitas 9.400 kg, pesawat ini mampu terbang sejauh 3.530 km pada kecepatan jelajah.

F-15E Strike Eagle - 2,5 Mach

F-15E Strike Eagle Angkatan Udara Amerika Serikat mengisi bahan bakar di udara di langit barat daya Asia, 1 April 2013.

F-15E Strike Eagle yang dibangun oleh Boeing Defense, Space & Security ini adalah pesawat tempur multiperan yang menjadi tulang punggung Angkatan Udara Amerika Serikat. Strike Eagle juga digunakan oleh beberapa negara lain seperti Angkatan Udara Arab Saudi, Singapura, Israel dan Korea Selatan.

F-15 membawa kanon 20 mm, Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAMs), Standoff Land Attack Missile Expanded Response (SLAM-ER), rudal AIM-120 AMRAAM, rudal udara-ke-udara AIM-9X Sidewinder dan bom diameter kecil. Mampu menyerang target saat terbang di ketinggian rendah di semua kondisi cuaca baik siang maupun malam.

F-15E didukung dua mesin P&W F100 atau dua GE F110 turbofan, masing-masing memberikan rasio daya dorong 129 kN dengan afterburner. Bila dilengkapi dengan tanki bahan bakar konformal (CFT) dan tiga drop tank, pesawat ini mampu terbang feri sejauh 3.840 km.

MiG-25 Foxbat - 2,83 Mach

MiG-25 (Kode NATO: Foxbat) adalah pesawat pengintai dan pencegat yang diproduksi oleh  Mikoyan-Gurevich OKB (sekarang RAC "MiG") yang saat ini digunakan dalam jumlah terbatas oleh Angkatan Udara Rusia dan beberapa negara lain.

MiG-25 telah diimpor oleh beberapa angkatan udara di dunia, antara lain Aljazair, Armenia, Suriah, Bulgaria, India, Irak dan Libya. Persenjataan MiG-25 terdiri dari dua rudal udara-ke-udara AA-6 Acrid dan dua R-40T.

Dua mesin Tumansky R-15B-300 turbojet yang tertanam masing-masing menghasilkan daya dorong sekitar 100,1 kN dengan afterburner yang memberikannya kecepatan maksimum 2,83 Mach (3.466 km/jam).

MIG-31E adalah varian ekspor dari pesawat tempur MIG-31 yang diproduksi oleh RAC "MiG". Pesawat ini memiliki kecepatan maksimum 2,83 mach (3.466 km/jam) dan dapat mengintersep dan menghancurkan target di semua ketinggian, baik di siang maupun malam hari. MIG-31 berada dalam layanan Angkatan Udara Rusia dan Kazakhstan. Ini adalah pesawat seri produksi pertama yang dilengkapi dengan airborne phased array radar. Pesawat ini dipersenjatai dengan kanon GSh-6-23M 30mm, rudal jarak jauh R-33E, rudal jarak menengah R-40TD1 (AA-6 Acrid) dan rudal jarak pendek R-60MK.

MIG-31E memiliki jangkauan 3.000 km tanpa isi bahan bakar dan 5.400 km dengan satu kali pengisian bahan bakar di udara.
